Need to start the activity/Story behind the scene : Proving the proverb ‘a graduate of economics is almost involved in the trade’ such a thing has been proved by sri Niranjan Kumar in the sheikhpura district in the trade of onion. Sri Kumar is a active dynamic entrepreneur engaged in the Onion storage and marketing in Sheikhpura district of Bihar who has shown the way to many others in this business and promoted the storage and export linkage to this commodity ‘onion’ and helped to explore higher price and thereby higher net profit to onion growers of the district. After graduation in 1995 he spent 3 years in private company and then entered in this business with encouragement and inspirations of a few persons including the scientists of KVK Sheikhpura. He constructed a onion storage godown of capacity 400 tones; size 100x40x 20 feet and successfully established the trade in the district.
Showing the way to others : After the success in this trade by Mr Niranjan in the year 1998 till now during the last 16 years about 100 active entrepreneur each of more than 500 tones average annual trading volume; entered in to this trade and made the district as a major hot spot for the export of onion to neighbor countries Bangladesh. Besides this more than 1000 farmers also made small storage godown at their farm and enhanced their capacity to hold onion for 3 months for higher profit.
Government support and subsidy,if any : There is no any government support and subsidy available for this trade. Mr Niranjan got banks support of credit as a Cash credit ( business loan) at higher(12-15%/ annum) rate of interest. He feels the need of policy support in the form of registered trader and insurance along with cheaper loans.
Marketing strategies developed for this trade : majority of onion producer directly sell their produce from their farm to local dealers; who serves grading, bagging, weighing, loading services with the help of female and male labourers after which goods are supplied through the trucks or stored into the gowdown for 3-6 months. Loaded onion trucks reach mandi of Hilli( Bellughat), Mehndipur,and Bujadange(Malda) at boarder area and transferred to the trucks of Banglades. Few producers hold their produce for 2-4 months during April-August and fetch higher price and profit.
Profits generated : Mr Niranjan earns annual profit of Rs. 10-20 Lakhs per annum and provide employment of 10 male and 15 female workers directly in his business by trading of 1600 tones onion. He rears his family in good quality of life and thinks about the expansion of his business, feeling satisfaction with the betterment of farmers of his district. By the earning he developed a commercial complex in 4000 square feet area at Patel chowk of Sheikhpura through which 25 youths got employment by small shops.
Future plans/ projections : Mr Niranjan projects the future of this trade as challenging and competitive to other onion producers markets of Madhya Pradesh. Suitable technical measures should be developed to ensure the sustainable production of onion from the same field for long period. He expects recognition by the registration as the traders; cheap credit facility and subsidy for the large storage onion godown, insurance facility etc from the government side. He is also keenly interested to develop processing plant for the production of onion Paste/Powder.

Proving the proverb ‘Where there is will there is a way’ has been again proved by a young entrepreneur Sri Nawal Kishore Singh of village Ambari of Shekhopursarai block in the Sheikhpura district of Bihar in the field of Broiler farming. Sri Nawal Kishore is a active dynamic entrepreneur engaged in the Broiler farming, who has shown the way to many others and followed by 22 successful rural youths of his village. Under the scarcity of land resources and any employment opportunity locally Mr Nawal Kishore was compelled and started a private job in sales at Delhi in 1995 just after dropping his education up to 12th class only. Abuse and torture by the owner of the company deeply hearted him. Awaking of self entrepreneurship he started due thinking for an option and came in to contact of a successful Poultry grower Gurgaon and got impressed. He spent few month with boiler farm and after gaining skill and confidence, returned to his native village, contacted KVK Scientists, local experts, banks and traders of broiler. He finally established a broiler farm and stared farming with 100 birds in the year 1999 with the credit support of Rs. 30,000 from Gramin Bank. Gradually he succeeded in his business/ entrepreneurship and got the credit of Rs. 5,00,000/-( Five Lakhs) from the bank and enlarged the capacity of broiler farm to 5000 birds per bactch.
Showing the way to others : Initially Mr. Nawal Kishore beared severe comments and criticize from the villagers and society about the broiler farming but after the success and good leadership quality hundreds of rural youth of the area and 22 youths of marginal farmer family of his village established the broiler farm and enjoying smart employment at their village. Out of 22 broiler farm , 7 has capacity of 4000 birds each; along with other 15 has the capacity of 1000 birds each. By this way, 22 family of his village are gaining monthly additional income from the enterprise ranging from 15,000 to 60,000/- through the broiler farming.
Government support and subsidy, if any : Mr Nawal Kishore got the first credit support of Rs. 30,000 from Gramin Bank Ambari. Gradually the bank increased the cash credit support by financing Rs.60,000/ in 2003; Rs. 100,000/- in 2006 and the credit of Rs. 5,00,000/-( Five Lakhs) in the year 2013. He is honest dedicated and person of positive thinking which is reflected by the banks relation as well as followers. He has not obtained any subsidy till date by any source.
Marketing strategies developed : Mr. Nawal Kishore developed a good market linkage of broilers to the nearby Barbigha and Sheikhpura markets as well as markets of the nearby districts. He gets good quality input materials like day old Chicks, medicines, Feed, small equipments etc locally through the dealer.
Profits generated : Mr. Nawal Kishore generates average profit per bird per batch/month as Rs. 15-20 which is variable depending upon several factors. He rears 4000 bird per month which results into his monthly profit more than Rs. 60000/- besides providing employment to 2-4 persons. He nurtures his family in good quality of life and thinks about the expansion of his agri- business. He feels satisfaction with the prosperity and recognition. By the earning he bought 10 decimal costly road side land and expanded his business.
Future plans/ projections : Mr Nawal Kishore projects the future of broiler farming as challenging and competitive to other parts of the country. Some times he also suffers severely by the rumour of bird flu and thereby lower price resulting into a net loss. Regarding this he expects insurance support from the government side which is yet to be available. He also expects recognition as the registration broiler farmer; cheap credit facility and subsidy for the enlargement of the enterprise. He supplies manures to the local farmers free of cost which results into bumper harvest and strong relation with them.

This is story of joint success of Smt. Chandrawati Devi w/o Sri Kedar Chauhan and Smt. Usha Devi, W/o Sri Yogendra Chouhan of Village Farpar under Ariyari block of
Sheikhpura District in Bihar. Both of these ladies have no mobile and belongs to BPL Family with no formal education and literate only. Both of them are members of SHG formed by JEEVIKA (an NGO). In the February 2016 they came in the contact of KVK Scientist searching for suitable means of alternative employment. After several contacts and active discussions with KVK experts and they decided to start Mushroom cultivation and got the training for 6 days during 15-20 February 2016. They actively learnt the technical as well as managerial skill by doing all works under the guidance of KVK Expert. They started their joint entrepreneurship by procuring 20 kg spawn of Oyster mushroom from Buddha Mushroom Lab Rajgir with inoculation in 100 bags in 150 kg straw hanging in a spare room of 150 square feet during the first week of March. They successfully grew 150 kg mushroom in their first attempt and sold total as fresh @ Rs. 120/ kg in the local market and villagers. In the first attempt they realized the net profit of Rs. 12000 and got confidence of production and marketing.
They further wish to produce mushroom through out the year. Besides this they also used Mushroom waste along with cow dung and other agricultural wastes in to vermi-compost pit. Encouraged through the success they become very eager for acquiring knowledge of other suitable mushroom like Milky and Paddy straw. Now Chandrawati and Usha Devi became not only a role model among the villagers but also recognized by the other organizations. They strongly admits the role of KVK as Knowledge Resource centre.

The crop production has been increased by more than 20 percent and income increase from this enterprise is about 25 percent. However income from Onion cultivation has increased by 76 percent mainly due to price hike and increase in production. Poultry enterprise alone contributes two third of his total net income which is about sixteen lakh rupees. He is now motivating fellow farmers of nearby villages. Increased his social and economic status. |
